Supply - Brunswick Community Hospital has announced that it will begin offering digital mammography services on Monday, June 30. This state-of-the-art technology will provide the latest advancements in the early detection of breast cancer.
From the patient's perspective, digital mammography is much like the traditional film screen mammography. Both use X-ray to generate images of the breast; however the new technology can now convert X-ray energy into a digital image. The resulting images are then immediately produced on the technologist's screen, thereby reducing the amount of time spent in the imaging suite and the need for retakes.
From the physician's perspective, digital mammography has paved the way for innovation in early detection.
"Research has shown that digital mammography may be more accurate in screening three types of women -those under age 50, women of any age with very dense or extremely dense breast tissue, and pre- or perimenopausal women," said Dr. Michael McCullough, radiologist at Brunswick Community Hospital.
Brunswick Community Hospital's imaging center is staffed with technologists and radiologists with special training in mammography to provide that extra level of comfort and care.
"At Brunswick Community Hospital, we are committed to providing timely and accurate results to women who receive a mammogram," McCullough said.
