Supply, N.C. - Brunswick Community Hospital was recently recognized as a leader in clinical quality and patient safety for its efforts to reduce the incidence of hospital-acquired infections, specifically Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA infections, which are difficult to treat if they develop.
VHA Inc., a national health care network, presented Brunswick Community Hospital with a 2009 Excellence in MRSA Reduction Award for reducing hospital-acquired MRSA infections by more than 50 percent per 1,000 patient days in 2009 as compared to 2008. Brunswick Community Hospital had only one hospital-acquired MRSA infection in 2009.
???Brunswick Community Hospital has demonstrated a significant commitment to patient safety through its infection prevention efforts, which help improve the quality of care while also reducing costs,??? said Terri Bowersox, director of performance improvement for VHA???s Central Atlantic region. ???Hospitals across the nation would benefit from looking at Brunswick Community Hospital performance and mimicking their work.???
Brunswick Community Hospital is one of only 13 hospitals in the in VHA???s Central Atlantic region consisting of North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Eastern Tennessee, Delaware, Maryland, Washington D.C., and Eastern Tennessee, to be recognized by VHA???s regional office in Charlotte, N.C.
Bowersox noted that one of the most essential elements to sustaining superior clinical quality levels is CEO leadership and commitment and a willingness by the nurses and physicians in the organization to learn from the best practices that are in place in other high performing hospitals.
???Brunswick Community Hospital gets high marks for both these success factors,??? Bowersox said.
???We have outstanding staff at Brunswick Community Hospital,??? said Denise Mihal, Brunswick Community Hospital president and chief operating officer for Novant Health???s Coastal Market. ???I am proud of our physicians, nurses and staff for continually raising the standards on patient safety.???
